The weather up here in Virginia is starting to get chilly and there’s nothing better than bundling up under a blanket with fresh made cookies in the Winter. Chai inspired spices provide a new twist on the classic snickerdoodle! Chai translates to “tea” in Hindi. In India, chai is tea! Cardamom, ground ginger, cinnamon, and allspice create a more complex flavor profile than the traditional snickerdoodle. A snickerdoodle is a type of cookie made with butter or oil, sugar, salt, and flour, and rolled in cinnamon sugar. For this one, we use butter. The chai spiced snickerdoodle pairs great with a glass of milk or a hot cup of tea.
I always associate the holidays with families baking together. Whether it is decorating sugar cookies, or baking a pie together, its a great bonding activity I do with my little one each year. An added plus, your kids will know how to make amazing sweets they can create on their own when they get older. Clearly, I am playing the long-game here.
This year we are planning to host our first ever holiday cookie swap with close family and friends. For those of you who have never heard of a cookie swap, its an event where each guest brings a different batch of cookies and everyone gets to take home a variety. Everyone shares the recipe they used and the hosts print them out for guests to take home. You can pick a specific theme, have a sign-up sheet, or just let people bring whatever they want! If chai spiced snickerdoodles are not your thing, I have an awesome peanut butter cookie recipe as well.
Cookie Making Tips
- Use soft butter to make it easier for mixing with sugar
- Room temperature eggs allow for the better mixing because the yolk break more easily
- Mix your dry ingredients together in a separate bowl so that it’s all well incorporated together before you mix it all to the butter, sugar, and eggs
- Be careful not to overmix or your dough will aerate, causing the cookies to come out flat

These were delicious!!! Slightly savory and slightly sweet made a perfect balance! Also a great balance of chewiness and crunchiness!
